Why the U.S. Imports 93% of Its Uranium: What It Means for Junior Explorers
As U.S. utilities face a 186-million-pound uranium deficit and 93% foreign dependency, junior developers and domestic miners are stepping up to bridge the nuclear supply gap.

American nuclear utilities are staring down a multi-decade mathematical dilemma that no amount of balance-sheet juggling can solve.
Fresh figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration reveal that domestic power plants loaded 40.9 million pounds of uranium into their reactor cores last year, a 15 percent drop from the 48.1 million pounds installed previously. Yet while reactor loading slowed slightly, overall commercial stockpiles quietly expanded by 9 percent to 170 million pounds as operators scrambled to build a buffer against global supply chain volatility. The real eye-opener lies further down the calendar: U.S. utilities project a massive baseline requirement of 360 million pounds of uranium over the next decade, yet existing long-term contracts cover just 174 million pounds.
That leaves a staggering 186-million-pound deficit waiting to be filled, creating an irresistible tailwind for the high-beta world of junior uranium developers.
