How five energy innovators secured $2.2 billion to replace military diesel generators with next-generation nuclear microreactors across domestic Army installations.

The Pentagon is officially breaking up with diesel backup generators and taking its energy resilience straight into the atomic age.
Under an ambitious initiative known as the Janus Program, the U.S. Army and Defense Innovation Unit have cleared up to $2.2 billion in funding for five nuclear energy companies to build, own, and operate transportable microreactors across five major domestic installations.
Aiming for operational readiness by September 30, 2028, the initiative seeks to fortify critical military infrastructure against commercial grid failures, cyber threats, and fuel supply disruptions.
The five-year milestone-based agreements distribute deployments across geographically strategic bases from New York to Texas. Antares Nuclear will deliver its initial microreactor to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, while BWX Technologies (NYSE: BWXT) takes charge at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. Meanwhile, General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems will supply Fort Hood in Texas, Radiant Industries will deploy factory-built units to Fort Benning in Georgia, and Westinghouse Government Services will install its eVinci microreactor at Fort Drum in New York.
