Ford will recall up to 3m vehicles
Problems with airbags may have caused up to 18 deaths in the US so far.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) has announced that it will recall approximately 3 million vehicles in the US and Canada for $ 610 million because of an airbag inflator problem that has been linked to 18 deaths in the US has been. The recall affects the 2006-2012 model years Ranger, Edge, Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKX and Lincoln Zephyr / MKZ. The move comes after the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration rejected the company's motion to keep the airbag inflators on the driver's side. The defect in the airbags, which are manufactured by the now bankrupt Takata company, can cause them to burst and potentially shards of metal flying around, which is dangerous. To date, over 67 million airbags have been recalled in the United States, and around 100 million airbags have been recalled by 19 major automakers worldwide. The defect in another version of the airbag caused them to explode, splitting shrapnel from the care. In addition to the 18 deaths reported to date, there have been over 400 injured drivers and passengers, some of whom have been mutilated or blinded. The Takata airbag-related recalls began in 2014 and have grown to be the largest recall in the industry. The Takata airbags that the company has used are different, but they're the same as those that have been recalled in the past. Ford's recall covers 2.7 million vehicles in the US and the automaker will include the cost in its Q4 results. The company has already recalled vehicles in the past because of the inflators on the passenger side. Ford said its safety data showed that the recall was not necessary for the driver's side airbag. Despite this reasoning, the company says it will respect the NHTSA's decision and launch a recall. In addition to the Ford recall, the NHTSA has also issued a recall to Mazda Motor Corp for 5,800 airbag inflators for the 2007-2009B series vehicles. Last November, the NHTSA also denied General Motors a motion over the airbags, forcing the company to recall 7 million SUVs and pickups at a cost of around $ 1.2 million.
