Impact BioMedical gets patent granted for innovative insect repellent
The subsidiary of Document Security Systems will soon launch its new anti mosquito repellent.

Document Security Systems Inc. (NYSEAMERICAN: DSS) announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Impact BioMedical Inc. has received a Notice of Issuance (US 10,8966,424) for 3FDB from the US Patent and Trademark Office. 3FDB is a functional fragrance formulation technology that increases the effectiveness of an existing mosquito repellent through a wonderfully scented combination of botanical oils. The 3FDB mosquito repellent formulation is an enhancer that works with current mosquito repellants such as Picaridin, DEET and IR3535. The booster inhibits two of the three receptors that mosquitoes use to locate their food, in this case humans. Daryl Thompson, Impact Biomedical Director of Scientific Initiatives and founder of GRDG Sciences LLC, said. In contrast, current mosquito repellants mainly target the mosquito's taste receptors. The 3FDB follows a multi-receptor strategy. It targets gustatory, olfactory and ionotropic receptors in insects to create a synergistic effect in repelling insects while inhibiting their ability to recognize and locate prey. Although 3FDB has numerous uses in daily life, the most important one could be its life-saving ability. Mosquitoes contribute to over a million deaths each year, according to the National Institutes of Health. They can spread diseases like dengue, malaria, West Nile yellow fever, zika, lymphatic filariasis, and chikungunya. Impact BioMedical's Chief Scientific Advisor, Dr. Roscoe M. Moore Jr. said, "This patent could pave the way for better protection against mosquito-borne diseases around the world." The company's motivation in finding a solution to this global health crisis was a desire to save lives. The Florida team discovered it in their own backyard. The company found the solution to minimize mosquito bites in orchids, particularly the ghost orchid that is common in the Florida Everglades and Cuba.
