Florida Greenlights Gold and Silver as Legal Tender

Florida just put gold back on the map.

On Tuesday, Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 999 into law—setting the stage for Floridians to use gold and silver as legal tender. This isn’t just symbolic. Under the bill, which takes effect July 1, 2026, government agencies and private businesses will be allowed to accept gold and silver coins as voluntary payment for goods, services, and debts.

The move, DeSantis said, reinforces Florida’s financial sovereignty and reduces dependence on fiat currency. “Florida stands firmly for freedom, economic self-determination, and resistance to government overreach,” the governor wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The bill doesn’t force anyone to accept precious metals, but it does remove barriers that have kept them impractical—starting with taxes. Gold coins that are at least 99.5% pure and silver coins that are 99.9% pure, and stamped accordingly, will now be exempt from sales tax if they’re sold for over $500.

And while physical gold might not be the easiest thing to carry around, HB 999 allows for electronic transfer systems to handle transactions, keeping the experience efficient and secure. Florida is following a path first blazed by Utah in 2011, but with gold recently hitting a record $3,500 per ounce, this time feels different. As investors run from market volatility and global instability, precious metals are again becoming a haven.

Critics say the move is largely political—designed to push back against federal power and the looming specter of central bank digital currencies. Supporters call it a practical hedge in a world full of financial uncertainty. Either way, Florida just lit a fire under the age-old debate about what really holds value in modern America.
