One recommendation is that people should get 8 hours of sleep every night. Proper sleep plays a huge role in people's overall health and wellbeing. When someone gets the right amount of sleep, it means they literally spend a third of their life sleeping, which further underscores the importance of sleep to humans. Unfortunately, not all people get the right amount of sleep every night. Poor sleep can significantly reduce a person's life expectancy due to an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. If someone is not getting enough sleep on a regular basis, it is a very serious health problem that needs to be addressed immediately. According to a recent study, cannabis may have the potential to help people who have difficulty getting enough sleep at night. Increased total sleep time Researchers recently looked at the relationship between cannabis use and the amount of sleep someone gets at night. The research team is based in California, but since sleep problems exist around the world, the results of the research are significant and applicable worldwide. "Our aim was to investigate the relationship between daily cannabis use and the subsequent objectively measured sleep quality in middle-aged and older adults with and without HIV," the study says. Seventeen people took part in the study, all between the ages of 50 and 70. Each test person reported cannabis use and length of sleep for 14 days in a row via a smartphone app survey. "In linear models with mixed effects, cannabis use was significantly associated with a higher later total sleep duration (ß = 0.56; p = 0.046). Cannabis use was not associated with a change in sleep efficiency (ß = 1.50; p = 0.46 ) still associated with sleep fragmentation (ß = 0.846, p = 0.756) on days with cannabis use compared to days without cannabis use ", according to the study. The researchers concluded that "these preliminary results suggest that cannabis use may have a positive effect on sleep duration in middle-aged and older adults." Cannabis - the safer choice There are several sleep aids available, both over-the-counter and by prescription, for people who suffer from sleep deprivation. There are also a variety of home remedies available, but not always effective and often based on subjective opinions and anecdotal evidence rather than hard science. Prescription drugs used to treat sleep disorders are not always effective, and even when effective, they usually have a variety of side effects. Even over-the-counter drugs can have harmful side effects in many cases. Cannabis, on the other hand, is a much safer and, in some cases, far more effective choice. Cannabis doesn't have many of the side effects that other drugs do.
