CAD 1 Billion Boost: Inside Canada’s Nuclear Supply Chain Success

Canada’s nuclear energy sector is making headlines, with Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company, spotlighting its robust supply chain as a driving force for the future of clean energy. Over CAD 1 billion (USD 700 million) in purchase orders issued to more than 350 Canadian companies this year underline the strength of the Candu ecosystem, perfectly positioned to support the next generation of reactor builds.

A Legacy of Innovation: The Candu Reactor

Since its inception in the late 1950s, the Candu (Canada Deuterium Uranium) reactor has been a cornerstone of Canada’s energy independence. Developed by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd in collaboration with Canadian industry, the first Candu reactors became operational in Pickering, Ontario, in 1971. Today, these reactors power grids in seven countries, including Canada, Argentina, and China, and serve as a model for pressurized heavy water reactors globally.

Introducing the Monark: A Game-Changing Generation III+ Reactor

The Candu Monark, unveiled last year by AtkinsRéalis, represents the pinnacle of nuclear innovation. Boasting a 1000 MW output—the highest among Candu designs—the Monark combines simplified construction, extended operational life of 70 years, and cutting-edge efficiency. Gary Rose, President and CEO of Candu Energy, emphasized its significance, stating, “Large Candu reactors are essential for meeting Canada’s clean energy goals while ensuring energy security and economic growth.”

The Monark is now under review by Canadian nuclear regulators for a Pre-Licensing Design Review, a critical step toward deployment.

Economic Benefits of Nuclear Expansion

Candu Energy’s commitment to Canadian industry is evident in its substantial domestic investment—97% of the company’s spending this year went to local businesses. According to a Conference Board of Canada study, constructing a four-unit Monark plant could inject CAD 40.9 billion into Canada’s GDP during manufacturing, engineering, and construction phases. Over its operational lifespan, the plant would generate an additional CAD 49.5 billion, supporting 3,500 full-time jobs annually.

This economic impact underscores the importance of nuclear energy not just as a clean energy solution but as a driver of Canadian prosperity.

Energy Security and Net-Zero Goals

Candu technology’s reliance on natural uranium, which does not require foreign enrichment, positions it as a critical player in Canada’s energy independence. With the federal government striving for net-zero emissions, nuclear energy offers a reliable, low-carbon solution. Rose urged policymakers to prioritize the sector:

“We call on our governments to support the Canadian nuclear sector and protect Canadian jobs in the drive to reach net-zero emissions.”

Canadians for CANDU Campaign: Building Momentum

The Canadians for CANDU campaign, launched this year, aims to promote Candu technology domestically and internationally. Advocates highlight its role in meeting clean energy targets, creating jobs, and bolstering Canada’s position as a global leader in nuclear technology.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Canadian Nuclear Energy

As the world grapples with the twin challenges of climate change and energy security, Canada’s nuclear supply chain stands as a beacon of innovation and reliability. The potential deployment of Monark reactors marks a pivotal moment for the industry, promising economic growth, energy security, and a cleaner future.
