Alibaba reacts to luxury product demand boom
The Chinese online retailer sets up a new direct logistic route to Singapore.

Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd (NYSE: BABA) Cainiao Smart Logistics Network is expanding and has established a new cargo flight route between Hainan Island and Singapore as the demand for luxury products is booming in China. According to General Manager James Zhao, the logistics arm will launch cargo flights for duty-free shuttle products, watches and handbags to mainland China. Cainiao will move luxury items and goods between the South China port and Singapore seven times a week. There is also the option of operating similar flights between Japan, New Zealand and South Korea and Hainan. These are popular destinations with Chinese tourists who traditionally traveled overseas to purchase high quality goods, but the pandemic has limited this. As a result, brands are trying to serve Chinese customers at home by shipping luxury products to mainland China. Analysts had forecast a slow return to global travel. With luxury spending in China hitting $ 53.3 billion last year, brands are looking for ways to get their products into one of the largest luxury markets in the world. The move to bring more luxury products to China comes as customers clear the boutiques. Corporations are rushing to develop strategies to capitalize on more than $ 110 billion in luxury spending in mainland China. Before the COVID-19 pandemic halted global travel, Chinese customers bought the majority of their luxury products overseas. The surge in spending on Hainan Island is critical for Asia-dependent luxury homes to weather the effects of a pandemic. For example, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior owner LVMH generated nearly 50% of its sales in Asia in the first quarter, with sales in the region excluding Japan increasing 86% on an organic basis. According to Bain & Co, the luxury goods market in China grew 48% in 2020 despite the COVID-19-related global travel disruption. That growth is likely to continue, setting China on track to claim the largest market share in luxury goods by 2025.
