Is Snowline Gold the "Freak Discovery" the Mining Industry Has Been Waiting For? Why Carson Block is Going Long on Gold

When Carson Block speaks, the market typically braces for a crash. The founder of Muddy Waters Capital has built a fearsome reputation, and a storied career, by dismantling corporate facades and exposing balance sheet sorcery. But in a twist that has caught the broader investment community off-balance, the world’s most notorious short-seller has discovered a "freak discovery" worth betting on: Snowline Gold Corp. (TSX: SGD | OTCQB: SNWGF).

The investment represents a profound philosophical pivot for Block, though he would argue his investigative methodology remains unchanged. He isn’t chasing the ephemeral hype of AI "pretenders" or tech momentum; instead, he is looking at the cold, hard geology of the Yukon. At the heart of his thesis is the Rogue Project’s Valley deposit, an asset Block describes as a "True Tier-1 Discovery" that is fundamentally misunderstood by a market currently blinded by the glitz of Silicon Valley.

Block’s conviction is rooted in the sheer visibility of the asset. While many junior miners rely on aggressive "block models", essentially mathematical guesses about what lies underground, Snowline’s gold is so accessible it can literally be seen from the air. Reflecting on the transparency of the site, Block noted in his Monetary Matters interview, "In the case with Snowline, because there's so much mineralization so close to the surface, it's not a question of, you know, can you trust the block models?" He further emphasized that his lead resource expert, Darren McLean, "can literally see gold on the surface, uh, you know, on, you know, of the land."

The economics of the Valley deposit appear, in Block's view, to be nearly bulletproof. With projected all-in sustaining costs (AISC) as low as $569 per ounce for the first five years, the mine is positioned to be a high-margin cash machine even if Gold Prices were to retreat. Block is strikingly blunt about the downside protection, stating, "We think Snowline gets taken out at 2x plus where it currently trades... even if the price of the underlying declines significantly." As of early 2026, the company has de-risked the project by commencing a fully funded pre-feasibility study (PFS), further validating Block's assertion that the asset is "the most compelling significant greenfield deposit that a major can make in the world."

Beyond the dirt and the drills, Block’s play is a strategic bet on the desperation of the industry’s giants. Major producers like B2Gold Corp. (TSX: BTO | NYSE: BTG), which already maintains a 9.9% stake in Snowline, have spent the last decade neglecting new exploration. Block argues these majors are effectively mining themselves into a corner: "They’re depleting their existing resources... it becomes more and more urgent to acquire." He paints a picture of a looming bidding war where CEOs will be forced to act to avoid looking "really bad" while their competition secures the few remaining world-class assets.

In a market defined by "anesthetized" risk and high-beta speculation, Block is doing the one thing no one expected: he’s going long on the intrinsic value of the earth. As he puts it, "Stop trying to go where nobody has been yet because they're probably not going to show up anytime soon either." For Snowline, however, it seems the world is finally starting to arrive.
