General Motors is investing 800m USD in Canada
The company is transforming its Ontario production plant into an EV manufacturing hub.

General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) announced a preliminary agreement with Unifor to invest approximately $ 800 million in transforming CAMI's Ingersoll, Ontario assembly plant to manufacture electric delivery trucks. Work on the plant that currently produces the Chevrolet Equinox SUV will begin immediately and could take two years. However, union workers have yet to ratify the contract to begin high-volume production of the EV600, an electric delivery van. The Detroit-based company makes the EV600 vans as part of its new BrightDrop business, which produces vehicles for delivery companies. As online shopping grows, so does the demand for electric delivery vans for delivery services as businesses seek cleaner ways to deliver packages. FedEx will be BrightDrop's first customer and the company will begin shipping EV600 vans later this year. The CAMI plant has produced three generations of the Chevrolet Equinox crossover SUV since 2004. Converting the plant to producing electric vans is a big step for CAMI as it secures the future of manufacturing at the company, which will invest $ 27 billion to bring electric cars to market by 2025. The Canadian government has praised the agreement and indicated that it will confirm its support once Unifor members ratify the agreement. Canada's Foreign Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said the results of the ratification vote were being awaited. This latest deal builds on GM's recent investments in Canada. In November, GM agreed to invest CA $ 1 billion in the Oshawa factory to expand capacity for full-size pickup trucks. Unifor National President Jerry Diaz said this shows where the market is headed and we are delighted to be a part of it. The union, which represents the hourly workers in Canada, said more details of the deal will be presented to union members at an online ratification meeting. The company is also optimistic that it will get government approval for incentives.
