FDA starts recall for certain hemp products in the US

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing a voluntary recall affecting dozens of hemp products for pets and humans. The Florida Department of Health recently informed MHR Brands of a lead contamination. MHR Brands first announced the recall last month and has been actively engaging consumers on the issue. The FDA said no complaints of health complications related to lead contamination have been reported. The agency encourages consumers to dispose of the products, monitor their health, and contact a doctor or veterinarian if adverse symptoms occur. "Exposure to lead could cause physical signs and symptoms such as pain, paresthesia / muscle weakness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, symptoms related to encephalitis, metal taste in the mouth, shock, hemolysis, or kidney damage," said the FDA in a message. Dozens of hemp-derived CBD tinctures marketed by MHR Brands and its subsidiary InHe Manufacturing for either human or pet consumption have been listed as contaminated. MHR Brands ran an independent analysis which found that it was not the oil itself that contained the lead, but the graduated drops they bought from a third party manufacturer. "We are absolutely true to our promise to provide our customers with products of the highest possible quality," a company spokesman told Marijuana Moment. "As an industry leader, we always want to do the right thing for our customers, so following this voluntary recall, we have taken extensive measures to ensure that our customers and dealers are notified and can get a free exchange for an unaffected version of the product." "While this recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration, the FDA does not endorse any products that are subject to this recall notice," the FDA said.
