Constellation Lands Record $840M Deal with US Federal Sector
Constellation’s historic $840M deal to supply carbon-free electricity paves the way for a sustainable federal future.

Constellation Energy is set to supply the US federal government with clean, reliable nuclear energy under an unprecedented ten-year, USD 840 million agreement. The deal, facilitated by the General Services Administration (GSA), represents the first multi-agency, long-term electricity procurement in US history, delivering an estimated 10 million megawatt-hours (MWh) to 80 federal facilities. This groundbreaking contract reinforces Constellation's leadership in clean energy while advancing the government’s ambitious carbon-neutral goals.
A Historic Step Towards a Carbon-Free Future
The agreement forms a cornerstone of the Federal Sustainability Plan, which aims to transition all federal operations to carbon pollution-free electricity (CFE) by 2030. With over 300,000 buildings and 600,000 vehicles under its purview, the federal government is the nation’s largest energy consumer. By leveraging Constellation’s nuclear energy capabilities, the GSA will lock in a reliable, cost-competitive energy supply while shielding taxpayers from future price hikes.
GSA Administrator Robin Carnahan highlighted the deal’s significance: "This historic procurement accelerates our journey toward a carbon-free energy future and demonstrates the federal government’s leadership in sustainable energy practices."
Powering Federal Agencies with Clean Energy
The contract will supply electricity to agencies spanning 11 states and Washington, DC, including:
- The Social Security Administration
- The Department of Veterans’ Affairs
- The Department of Transportation
- The National Archives and Records Administration
- The Federal Reserve System
- The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
This initiative aligns with broader government efforts to enhance energy efficiency, promote conservation measures, and integrate locally sourced clean energy into federal operations.
Constellation’s Role in Reinventing Nuclear Energy
Joe Dominguez, President and CEO of Constellation, praised the agreement as a turning point for nuclear energy: "For decades, our nuclear fleet has provided carbon-free, reliable energy. This partnership marks a shift in recognizing nuclear as a critical component of our clean energy future."
The deal follows Constellation’s recent collaboration with Microsoft to restart Three Mile Island Unit 1 as the Crane Clean Energy Centre, adding 1,100 megawatts of clean energy by 2028. Constellation’s retail pilot in Washington, DC, launched in December, also enables consumers to power their homes with 100% nuclear energy, underscoring its commitment to expanding nuclear’s role in everyday energy use.
Driving Resilience and Reliability
The GSA’s strategic approach to energy procurement not only prioritizes sustainability but also bolsters the resilience of federal facilities. By securing a fixed supply of nuclear energy, federal agencies can better manage energy demands and reduce reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.
This record-breaking contract is not just about energy supply; it’s a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and reliability. As Constellation and the federal government join forces, they are setting a powerful example for how public and private sectors can work together to combat climate change and foster a sustainable future.
