Apple drastically reduces production plans for data glasses
Technical difficulties lead to massive cutbacks in Apple's new data glasses

Apple has had to reduce its production plans for the new "Vision Pro" data glasses due to technical problems. Instead of the planned one million devices, fewer than 400,000 are now expected to be produced. The market-ready production of the headset, which is considered a significant product launch, is proving difficult. In particular, the complexity of the design and difficulties in production are causing problems, especially the high-resolution screens pose a challenge.
Apple originally planned to sell one million headsets in the first year after launch. However, the tech giant is apparently falling well short of that goal. Information from Luxshare, the Chinese manufacturer of the glasses, and two Chinese suppliers indicates that fewer than 400,000 units are expected to be produced in 2024. Luxshare is said to be the sole producer of the data glasses.
The launch of the "Vision Pro" has already been postponed to "early next year," which is a big gap from the original launch in June this year. This was previously interpreted by analysts as possible problems in the supply chain. In addition, the timeline for a lower-priced version of the glasses has also been pushed back, according to the report.
The long-awaited "Vision Pro" was unveiled after seven years of development. The data glasses enable immersion in virtual worlds and projection of apps or objects into space. It is controlled solely by eye movements, hands and voice. The device, with a starting price of $3499, is expected to be available in the US in early 2024.
